Fire Force, written by Atsushi Okubo, which is the writer for Soul Eater, recently came out this year to a lot of praise. Along with Demon Slayer and Dr. Stone, it has been one of the most talked about new anime series out there.
Is it worth your time and should you check it out?

Is Fire Force Good

Fire Force is about Shinra Kusakabe, a third generation pyrokinetic who can set his feet on fire at will. With an unfortunately ability to smile during high pressure situations and a situation involving his family while he was still a child, Shinra Kusakabe has been known as a devil his entire life.
In order to fulfil a promise, Shinra joins the Special Fire Force Company to take out Infernals, people who have spontaneously combusted and transformed into fire demons that cause nothing but destruction.
If you love your action shonen series, then Fire Force is definitely worth a watch. The series also has some weird moments that Atsushi Okubo is known for. From Shinra’s strange smiling quirk to the random bits of fan service, there are a few tropes here, but the series doesn’t suffer much from it.
There is one thing that sort of took me out of the experience when watching Fire Force and that is Tamaki Kotatsu. For some strange reason, Tamaki Kotatsu has something called the Lucky Lecher Lure, which forces her into random situations for fan service.
This is purely put into the series for comedic effect, but even in serious situations, the series takes time out to lewd Tamaki Kotatsu up just enough to so that you don’t forget that she is plagued with this syndrome. It is played for laughs, but it still just seems a bit random.

Animation and Fights

However! For all of the random fan service that the series has, there is a lot of action to make up for it. The series moves at a brisk pace and the fighting definitely matches it.
There isn’t a lot of choreography in the series so the matches can feel a bit brisk, but what is shown on the screen is pretty great to look at.
The animators really take advantage of Shinra’s Devil Footprints ability and it gives him tons of mobility options. There is a lot to say about other characters too, such as Shinra’s chief that shoots people with a real gun, but can use his ability to mitigate the damage and even cause a ricochet effect on the bullets.

Fire Force Plot

Surprisingly, despite the fact Fire Force only has 12 episodes, it has gone through the plot at a breakneck pace. The series has seen tons of development and the overarching plot is quickly getting developed.
In the episodes I’ve seen so far, I haven’t seen much filler or anything that doesn’t seem necessary. The plot is quickly evolving, but it still hasn’t gotten into the really interesting stuff.
If you are looking for a new shonen series to help pass the time, I think this is definitely up your alley. It isn’t the best show this season, but it is definitely a fun watch.
Also, by far, one of the most important things for a new anime series is the opening and the Fire Force anime opening is LIT! I know what I said, you can’t stop me.
What did you think of the series?
